PTC Club and Event Happenings:

Fall Book Fair Update

Our fall Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success!

Thank you to all those who purchased books and especially those who donated books to classrooms. Also, a huge thank you to all those who volunteered at the fair.

Book fairs cannot happen without an army of volunteers!

We had sales of just over $6,000 (!) which means we get $3,315 back in Scholastic Dollars, which we use to purchase books from Scholastic. This allowed us to purchase books for the library and the remaining books the teachers picked out for their classrooms. Again, thank you! Your support of the Book Fair made this investment in Terra Linda possible.

Our next Scholastic Book Fair will be January 29 – February 1.

Cedar Mill Taekwondo

It’s not too late to sign up for this introductory class at Cedar Mill Taekwondo!

Classes start on Oct. 29th

Sign up your child for 3 weeks of class and the entire registration fee of $49, which includes uniform and belt, will be donated directly to your TERRA LINDA PTC.

Register online

PTC Meeting

Join us at the upcoming PTC meeting on Tues. Nov 6!

We will be sharing critical tips for ensuring your student’s academic success based on research from Columbia University. Also, learn what we are doing at Terra Linda to grow our readers and writers.

Running ClubRunning Club

Running Club will be presenting ribbons and medals at the assembly for everyone that has completed a half marathon or a full marathon!

Did you know that we count every lap your child runs at Terra Linda?  Reminder you child to report laps ran during brain breaks, PE, and during recess.  We also count races!  So if your child has run a fun run, we will record those miles too!

Option Schools Information Night

Terra Linda will host an Options Information Night on Thursday, November 1 at 6:30 in our Cafeteria. This information is important for 4th and 5th Grade parents and students. However, all Terra Linda families are welcome. Much like looking at colleges in your junior and senior year of high school, it is important to think ahead.

Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available starting Monday, October 15, 2018. Students may only select one option on their application, so do some early investigation of the options online.

Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 7, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. (PST).

In addition to Terra Linda’s information night, the District will be holding open houses. Please see the Open House schedule for details.

OBOBOBOB

Registration will remain open through January.

The next meeting for OBOB will be on November 20, after school in the library until 4:00.  This meeting will focus on the book, Real Friends.

Please contact Kelly Olson kellyaolson@gmail.com with questions

Running ClubRunning Club

Terra Linda Running Club is off and running this year!  The first day of running our students ran 89.5 miles and finished September with 839.75 miles!!  This is like running to Sequoia National Park!

What is Running Club?
Terra Linda Running Club is PTC sponsored and volunteer organized.  Every student is a member even though participation is optional.  TLRC takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch recess.  We have a group of committed volunteers that keep track of laps, hand out prizes, and cheer on runners!

Can my child run extra?
YES!  This year we are encouraging every student to track the laps they run during P.E., brain breaks with their teacher, and laps during other recesses.  We are also going to count miles from any race that students do outside of school!

We aren’t going to track a few things like fitbit counters, sports practice laps, or hikes on the weekends.  We really want to encourage kids to choose to run on OUR track and not get distracted with too many other activities.

Prizes?!
We have a reward system for every runner!  When students complete their first mile they are awarded a wristband.  They then receive a chain and a token at 5k (3 miles) and tokens at other milestones!  We also give out a special token once a month to every participant.  Look for pumpkins in October!  And for our kids that really go the distance we have a ribbon at a Half Marathon (13 miles) and a medal at a Marathon (26 miles).

Cast your VOTE

The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a five-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.

If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.

In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton’s elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools. The current levy pays for five full time teachers at Terra Linda.

PTC Club and Event Happenings:

Congratulations to Ms. Schroeder’s First Grade Class!

Ms. Schroeder’s first grade class won the $100 prize for class participation at the Jog-A-Thon (kudos to Mrs. Kohl’s kindergarten class for tying)!

After winning, the class took a vote and conducted research to determine which animal would make the best class pet. Students brainstormed, researched online, and wrote letters to PetSmart to get answers to their questions.

After a review of all their information, students chose a Winter White Dwarf hamster and aptly named her Snowball. Students watched a video and read books on hamster care before preparing a formal class agreement to ensure Snowball is treated well.

Snowball has only been a Terra Linda Tiger for one week but she’s received a very warm and ecstatic welcome. Snowball has been a great lesson on motivation and reward, research, and responsibility!

THANK YOU to Ms. Schroeder, her students, and parents for working hard to raise money for our school!

Beaverton School District Clothes Closet

The BSD Clothes Closet is a volunteer service organization that provides free clothing for children, in need, in grades K-12, who reside in the District attendance area. It is staffed by Beaverton School District parent group volunteers. Students can find school-type clothing such as: jeans, t-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, warm coats, socks and underwear.

We wanted to combine Terra Linda Movie Night with an opportunity to give back to our community. Please bring new socks and/or underwear and place them in the lobby bins at Movie Night. There’s currently a high demand for larger sizes that fit ages 13-18.

If you are unable to attend Movie Night but would like to donate, we will have a bin available for drop off in the school lobby, 1/22-1/31.

Family Movie Night

The Terra Linda PTC would like to invite you to a fun family movie night on Friday, Jan. 19th @ 6:30pm

Entrance is FREE and put on by the PTC.

If you’d like to donate to the BSD Clothes Closet, bring new socks and/or underwear and place them in the lobby bins at Movie Night.

Concessions will be available and $1 raffle tickets will be sold to win some amazing Lego sets!!

PLEASE NOTE:

All children will be admitted with a supervising adult present.  Please do not drop off children as we are not providing supervision. Parent/Guardian and/or responsible adult must remain at Terra Linda for the duration of the event and supervise the children they bring.

This movie is rated PG. We’d like to provide you with a movie review to determine if this would be a good movie for your child.

PTC Meeting

You may have noticed that we’ve changed the format of the PTC meetings this year. We’re sending out the agenda and updates before the meeting, so everyone can see the topics ahead of time.

The updates will not be reviewed, in the meeting, unless parents/staff have questions. It’ll give us more time to discuss PTC business that requires parent input and feedback.  Please bring questions or concerns to the meeting.  We welcome your input!

We’re hoping this will help streamline the meetings, so we can discuss topics that really matter to our Terra Linda community. We’d love to see you at our next meeting!

Some months we will have guest speakers on topics that matter to you.  Save the date for the December PTC meeting:  Wednesday, Dec. 6

We’ll learn about how BSD elementary schools are approaching math instruction this year.

  • What are students doing during the school day?
  • How can you be supportive at home?
  • How do the math skills and strategies build from year to year?

Join us for an interactive presentation beginning at 7:00 pm followed by a brief discussion of PTC activities and events.

Scholastic Book Fair

Last week’s book fair was a success!

The PTC received 25% of sales, over $1,200, so we were able to purchase every book that teachers and Mrs. Nelson, our librarian, had requested.

Thank you to the many parent volunteers and Sunset HS students who made this event possible!

Canned Food Drive

Don’t forget our annual canned food drive is coming up next week.

If you are able to donate this year, please bring non-perishable food items to the Terra Linda lobby from 11/13 – 11/17.

All food collected will be distributed to Terra Linda families in need, along with a PTC-funded gift card to round out a Thanksgiving meal. Sturdy, medium-sized boxes are also needed to package the food. Please drop off boxes in the office.

Here are the most needed items:
