Birthday Party!

Guess who is about to turn 50! Our very own Terra Linda Elementary will turn 50 in the fall of 2020 and we are planning a big bash for our school and neighborhood community. Green Team Update

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coming up on 10/26. Please use this website to find a location near you to safely dispose of prescription drugs so they don’t end up in the wrong hands or end up contaminating soil or waterways.https://takebackday.dea.gov/

Makerspace

October Learning Tech Toy: Oslo

Starting this current cycle of Specials, the Terra Linda kids will be playing with Osmos in the Makerspace room. The new layout of the room will hopefully offer a sense of movement to learning and enhance creativity.

What is Osmo? “Osmo is a unique educational gaming accessory that opens up your iPad to the infinite possibilities of physical play. Crafted with reflective artificial intelligence, Osmo’s advanced technology bridges the real and digital realms.”

Want to play along with the kids? We are looking for volunteers to offer support and guidance in the Makerspace room during these sessions with the Technology teacher. Activities in future will involve craft activities as well. Therefore, volunteers are welcome to develop ideas and participate. Piccolo Mondo Toys in Bethany Village is partnering with local schools from November 11th-17th. Art Literacy

Five times per year students learn general biographical information about a featured artist, learn about his/her work, and experience a hands-on art project. All materials are supplied and both lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations for each project/artist are provided. You do NOT need to be an artist or have any art history background to be an Art Lit presenter!

Clothes Closet – Lost and Found Support

Help sort through lost and found, launder clothes and deliver to Clothes Closet.

Help to plan the 5^th grade end of year party!

Library/Media Center Volunteer

Assist with checking out books to students and reshelving books

Oregon Battle of the Books

Encourages students who enjoy reading, with goals to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

If you did not specifically opt OUT of sharing your information, it will be shared in the Terra Linda Student Directory. Scholastic Book Fair

Our Arctic Adventure Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the school library from Tuesday, October 15th – Friday, October 18th at the times below:

Before School 8:10 am – 8:28 am
Lunch Recess Time 10:45 am – 12:30 pm
After School 3:05 pm – 3:30 pm
and Friday, October 18th from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm (during Move Night)

New This Fair – eWallet

Scholastic Book Fair’s new digital payment option is a great alternative to sending students to school with cash. Parents can easily create a Book Fair eWallet with a credit card and set a spending limit for their student. After the fair, any unused funds are released back to the cardholder. It’s so easy! You can set up an eWallet for your student now using information found on our Terra Linda Book Fair page.

Parent/Guardian Information

Terra Linda will receive 50% of sales in Scholastic Dollars to buy books for the school!
Parents/Guardians: If visiting the fair during the day, a visitor badge, is required. Please check in at the office.
Teachers will set aside books you can purchase and donate to classrooms, if you wish. When purchasing your own books at the fair, you can also chose to contribute additional money, in any amount, that will be used to buy books for the school.
If you cannot make it to the Book Fair, you can also purchase books online: 10/9 – 10/22 and 25% of your purchase will go to the school. Look for details on our Terra Linda Book Fair page.

Volunteers

We are still in need of volunteers to help make the Book Fair a success. We especially need help from 8:00 – 8:30. No past experience needed. If you are a current approved volunteer you can sign up to help here – Book Fair Help.

Green Team Update

Last spring, several dedicated Terra Linda students took it upon themselves to fundraise and purchase durable silverware to replace the plastic silverware being used in the cafeteria. Lately, the cafeteria staff has noticed some of this silverware accidentally getting thrown out. A gentle reminder to students about not throwing away silverware at lunch time would be great.

Movie Night

Is Movie Night on your calendar? 🍿 The PTC will be presenting Toy Story 4 on Friday, October 18th, 6-8pm. The Book fair will be in full swing too! 📚 Don’t miss out. To infinity & beyond!

Volunteer Orientation:

All new volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend our annual Volunteer Orientation at school on Tuesday, 9/17 from 6:00 – 6:30 PM, just prior to our September PTC meeting at 6:30 that evening. We will be reviewing the Volunteer Guidelines and taking a tour of the school. For those unable to attend, the guidelines and map will be sent out following the training.

Work Party

This year Work Party will be meeting on Tuesday mornings at 9AM. The teachers give us projects (making copies, cutting things out, etc…) to work on in the lobby. Bring your own coffee, chat with other parents, and help all at the same time. Come weekly, every other week, monthly – whatever your schedule allows. Dining For Dollar$

Our first dining for dollars event is Monday, September 23rd at CHIPOTLE on Cornell! If you mention Terra Linda when you order between 4-8 pm, 33% of your purchase will be donated back to the school! Many classes are still in need of Classroom Reps and Party Parents as well as classroom and field trip volunteers. See information below.

Classroom Representative:
The Classroom Representative is responsible for working with the teacher to determine current and future volunteer needs. Once needs are established, they will work with the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule shifts in the volunteer system. They help to ensure parents know they need to sign up in the volunteer system and go through the background check to be eligible to volunteer in the classroom and help on field trips. There is only one classroom representative for each classroom.

Party Parent:
The Party Parent is responsible for coordinating the classroom parties. There are three per year (Halloween, Valentine’s Day and End-of-Year) There is a budget set for these parties.

Party Helper:
Party Helpers work with the Party Parent to prepare for the parties and help on the day of the party.

Field Trip:
Help during future class field trips. Those signed up for field trips will be contacted before each event with further information.

Note: Please go to opportunities and find your child’s teacher to sign up. Signing up for a Classroom Representative or Party Parent position only indicates your interest in the position. We will reach out to those that have expressed interest once they have been approved by the teacher.

Makerspace: UPDATE

Special thanks to our technology assistant Nicole Jackson, and parent volunteers, Kelly Olson, John Schaeffer, Gavin Redshaw.

The Makerspace is finally up and running!

Mrs. Batsell introduced the area to the staff during a staff meeting last Tuesday and later in the week Terra Linda’s, SALT Lego Robotics team presented their project and demonstrated their robot on the Makerspace’s own Lego robotics field table.

The room has craft supplies as well as STEM learning tools, so children should be able to use the space for everything from expressing their creativity by making things like greeting cards, to programming robots or making videos.

This is an evolving project and we are so excited to be able to bring this resource to your children.

Jog-A-Thon Corporate Sponsorships

Dining for Dollars

Next Event: Cornell Pizzicato 1/15/19 from 11AM-9PM.

Terra Linda will receive 20% off ALL purchases throughout the entire day–no flyer necessary. Gift cards are also included! The restaurant is VERY small, so call ahead orders for take out or delivery are recommended.

If you are unable to attend that day, you can pre-order gift card purchases through Becky Seppala by emailing your requested amount by 1/10/19. The gift cards will be distributed following the event. They have also offered to include any corporate orders throughout the day purchased at ANY Pizzicato location. If this is something you’re interested in, please contact Becky.

ALSO… Pizzicato will be choosing one of our student’s recipe creations for their “special” pizza that day to honor Terra Linda. Please have your child complete the Budding Chef Recipe Form and send by 1/7/19 if they are interested. The winner will be announced before the event. Plan to attend the PTC meeting on January 8 at 6:30pm when we will provide time to answer questions about Erin’s Law and the four sexual abuse prevention lessons that will be taught between late January and April. You can find the lessons listed by grade level on fightchildabuse.org. The requirement of Erin’s Law is four lessons a year at each grade level, K-12.

The Fall Book Fair is NEXT WEEK! This year’s fall fair theme is The Enchanted Forest.

This year, in addition to purchasing books at school, you can also purchase books online. See details below.

The Book Fair is a wonderful opportunity to share your love of reading with your whole class by donating a book to your student’s classroom. Teachers have chosen books they would like to have in their classroom and set them aside behind the cashier.

Book Fair Online:

Online shopping for the fair offers an expanded selection of books for all ages. Online shopping begins on 10/10 and ends 10/23. Any books ordered online can ship to the school for free and we’ll get them to you or you can pay to ship to an address.

NOTE: The site has a School Wish List, however the books listed are a default list from Scholastic and do not reflect what the school would like. Please visit the fair at school if you would like to purchase and donate books to classrooms. Thank you.

Movie Night

Terra Linda Movie Night will be held on Friday, October 19 at 6pm. The featured movie this year will be Coco.

Students MUST bring a parent/guardian with them to this event. There is no charge for the movie and popcorn will be provided for everyone. Additional concessions will be sold.

Doors open at 6:00 and the movie begins at 6:15.

Running Club

Terra Linda Running Club is off and running this year! The first day of running our students ran 89.5 miles and finished September with 839.75 miles!! This is like running to Sequoia National Park!

What is Running Club?
Terra Linda Running Club is PTC sponsored and volunteer organized. Every student is a member even though participation is optional. TLRC takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch recess. We have a group of committed volunteers that keep track of laps, hand out prizes, and cheer on runners!

Can my child run extra?
YES! This year we are encouraging every student to track the laps they run during P.E., brain breaks with their teacher, and laps during other recesses. We are also going to count miles from any race that students do outside of school!

We aren’t going to track a few things like fitbit counters, sports practice laps, or hikes on the weekends. We really want to encourage kids to choose to run on OUR track and not get distracted with too many other activities.

Prizes?!
We have a reward system for every runner! When students complete their first mile they are awarded a wristband. They then receive a chain and a token at 5k (3 miles) and tokens at other milestones! We also give out a special token once a month to every participant. Look for pumpkins in October! And for our kids that really go the distance we have a ribbon at a Half Marathon (13 miles) and a medal at a Marathon (26 miles).

OBOB

Terra Linda will be participating in Oregon Battle of the Books for the fourth year and our season is about to get underway!

What is OBOB?

The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-5th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.

OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

Tomorrow, Friday 9/28 is the Jog-A-Thon!

Box Tops

Help our school earn cash by clipping Box Tops from products and sending them to school! Each one is worth 10¢ and will go toward funding various PTC activities.

Eco-School Network

Calling all eco-warriors!

The Eco-School Network is a group of parents in the area who plan and implement green initiatives in schools. Every fall, they hold a training for any new, interested parents. Information below for interested parties.

Our parent leaders and students are getting so darned excited about school gardens, green teams, waste reduction, and dreaming up their next green school project!

Join us for a dessert meet-up on October 1st to connect with our supportive community and learn about our free training that can help you create change at your child’s school. Meetings are from 7-8:15pm at the homes of parent leaders.

New volunteers to Terra Linda

Thank you to those that have signed up to become volunteers!

New volunteer applications are still being processed by the district. We are just now starting to see new volunteers added to Terra Linda who applied at the end of August. If you completed the application, know that this time of the year is the busiest for the District and it may take a few more days to hear back.

Please ensure you have signed up in My Volunteer Page to volunteer in your child’s classroom as a classroom volunteer, party helper, or field trip helper depending on your interests. This will help the classroom representative, and party parent know who is interested in helping in the classroom.

Information will be sent to those who have signed up for the Classroom Representative and Party Parent positions by the end of the weekend. They will work with the teacher and then will reach out to those who have signed up to volunteer in the classroom with details about any classroom volunteer opportunities and to request party help.

Student Directory

The online student directory will be sent out to parents in the coming weeks. This will be a password protected link that only Terra Linda parents will have access to.

If you would like to opt out of sharing any part of your personal information, please submit this form by Friday, 9/14.

Handel’s Homemade Ice-Cream: Dining for Dollars Event

A new school year calls for ice cream!

Our first Dining for Dollars event of the year is TODAY, September 13th, at Handel’s Homemade ice cream from 11AM-10PM.

Handel’s is located next to Safeway at 13539 NW Cornell Rd. When anyone presents the flyer your child brought home (or this digital flyer), Terra Linda will receive 20% of the purchases, including gift cards!

In addition to single servings of ice cream, they sell pints, quarts, milkshakes, and they make ice cream pies and cakes, to name a few of their treats!

Passport Club

Great job to all of the students on their final check day last week! Because of state testing and mixed – up timing, 5th grade classes of Rafanan and McAndie will have their final check day for May countries on the morning of Thursday, June 7th.

June 7th is also second chance day for any students who would like to make up for any countries they have missed in previous months. Come and check those off to improve your record! Everyone is welcome- please study whatever you’ve missed and come see us in the lobby that day. We can’t wait to help!

Jog-A-Thon

Our 3rd Annual Jog-A-Thon was a success!

Thank you to the many volunteers, parents, grandparents, community members, and Sunset High School students who came out to cheer on the students. We had a blast!

Please help us finish this fundraising campaign strong, just like the kids did on the track this week. Every donation, no matter the size, helps our Terra Linda community.

All donation envelopes, with all money included, need to be turned into teachers by Friday, Oct. 27.

Please make sure your student’s name and teacher is written on the envelope. The final day to collect pledges through PledgeStar is also Oct. 27.

If your employer matches donations, please use the tax receipts that come home with students this week to apply for matching funds. Additional 2017 Jogathon Tax Receipts can also be printed. If you are a Nike employee, please make your donation directly through the Nike giving website to get the match.

We will review the BSD Option Schools for middle school and have a panel discussion with representatives from each school.

Canned Food Drive

Our annual canned food drive is coming soon!

Please bring non-perishable food items to the Terra Linda lobby Nov. 13-17. All food collected will be distributed to Terra Linda families in need, along with a PTC-funded gift card to round out a Thanksgiving meal.

Sturdy, medium-sized boxes are also needed to package the food. Please drop off boxes in the office.

Dining for Dollars

We are partnering with the Cornell Pizzicato for our next Dining for Dollars event on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

They will be donating 20% of their entire day’s sales to Terra Linda (including gift cards)!

The restaurant has very limited seating, so it’s recommended that you call in advance for take out orders, or have it delivered to you! If you are unable to participate that day, you are able to order gift cards by emailing Becky Seppala at diningfordollars@terralindaptc.org

Also, students may submit this Budding Chef form to Becky Seppala or bring it to the school office if they would like their own pizza recipe to be entered into a contest to be the featured pizza special for the day of our event!

Get ready to GLOW!!!

Dance and Glow, on Oct. 27 from 6:30-8:00pm at Terra Linda.

Wear your whites or glow in the dark clothes and come ready to rock out with your friends to our awesome DJ!

It’s gonna be GLOWTASTIC!

U.S World Class Taekwondo Association, Character Kids program

When you sign up your child for this 3-week class, 100% of the proceeds go to Terra Linda.

It’s really a win-win for everyone!

The three week class includes:
1. Focus and Confidence
2. Discipline and Respect
3. Bully Prevention

Jog-A-Thon: DATE CHANGE

Jog-A-Thon will now be held on Tuesday, 10/24.

Because of forecasted thunderstorms we need to change the date of Jog-A-Thon to ensure student safety.

The running times remain unchanged.

Jog-A-Thon Schedule:

9:00-9:40 4th Grade

9:40-10:20 3rd Grade & SRC (Mrs. Eckrode)

10:20-11:00 1st Grade & SRC (Mrs. Hefty)

11:00-11:40 5th Grade

12:00-12:40 Kindergarten

12:40-1:20 2nd Grade
